The BJP has accused TMC leaders of planning the Murshidabad violence, calling it “planned attacks on Hindus.” The allegation comes after a Calcutta High Court probe report highlighted the involvement of Trinamool Congress leaders.

A serious allegation has come up in connection with the recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. A committee set up by the Calcutta High Court has submitted a report that points fingers at a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party.

The committee was formed to look into the violent incidents that happened during protests against the Waqf Amendment Bill. According to the findings, a TMC leader was involved in the violent clashes that broke out in Murshidabad.

This report has now led to a political storm. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made strong claims after the release of the committee’s findings. They alleged that the violence was not just a result of public anger or chaos, but was actually “planned attacks on Hindus” and carried out by people linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The BJP stated that these attacks were organised and targeted against members of the Hindu community.

The clashes, which started during protests over the Waqf Amendment Bill, sparked significant political controversy.

The report also highlighted extensive arson, looting, and the deliberate destruction of shops and malls. Referencing the panel’s conclusions, the BJP has called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take action against the Trinamool leaders involved.

The three-member committee’s report, submitted to the High Court, noted that a local councillor was responsible for orchestrating the attacks on April 11 in Dhulian town, while local police were described as “inactive and absent.”

According to the report, protests against the amendments to the Waqf Act began on April 4 throughout the Jangipur police district in Murshidabad and escalated into violence starting April 8.

The report also noted that two individuals, Haragobinda Das and his son Chandan Das, were killed by a mob on April 12 in Jafrabad, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Samserganj police station.

Key Findings From The Report

  1. All attacks occurred on Friday, April 11, starting at 2 PM, under the direction of local councillor Mehbub Alam.
  2. Mehbub Alam personally arrived at the location with miscreants to supervise the destruction of homes.
  3. The local MLA was present during the vandalism and left the scene after witnessing the destruction alongside the miscreants.
  4. A man named Amirul Islam came to the site, identified houses that had not yet been attacked, and instructed the miscreants to set them ablaze.

Details From The Incident

  1. Bhadu Mondal reported that on Friday, April 11, around 4 PM, their shops and market stalls were looted. The next day, around noon, their house was set on fire.
  2. A total of 113 houses were damaged. Victims who had fled to Malda were forcibly returned by police, raising concerns that images circulated by Trinamool leaders showing people “returning” were staged. Valuables worth lakhs, including jewelry, cash, furniture, and livestock, were stolen.
  3. During the unrest in Betbona, calls were made to the police at 4 PM on both Friday and Saturday, but there was no response.
  4. A person named Debashis Ghosh reported that the local administration immediately ordered his abandoned home to be cleaned up, which raised questions about their priorities.
  5. Amirchand Mondal stated he and his family were locked inside their home, which was soaked in petrol in an attempt to burn it down. They were rescued by the Border Security Force (BSF).
  6. Gopal Mondal reported that the administration removed them from their shelter and left them in an open field, forcing them to live outdoors.
  7. Miscreants cut off water supplies near the homes to prevent residents from extinguishing the fires. Women’s clothing was deliberately burned, leaving them with nothing to wear.
  8. Despite the police station being only 300 meters from the site of these incidents, no action was taken.
