Mercedes Owner Serves Legal Notice to Ghaziabad Civic Body Over Waterlogging Damage: Rs 5 Lakh Compensation

GHAZIABAD: A Ghaziabad resident has sent a legal notice to the municipal corporation after his Mercedes-Benz GLA 200D broke down due to severe waterlogging during heavy rains on July 23. He has sought Rs 5 lakh to cover the repair expenses, along with additional compensation for the inconvenience and hardship caused.

Amit Kishore, a resident of Sector 11, Vasundhara, was driving through Lajpat Nagar, Sahibabad, when his Rs 60-lakh car stalled in deep water. Trapped for over two hours, the vehicle suffered significant mechanical and electronic damage. It had to be towed to a Noida service center, which estimated repair costs to be a whopping Rs 5 lakh.

In Kishore’s words,

“It just wouldn’t start again. I had to arrange a crane to take it to a service centre. The damage was extensive and avoidable.”

Represented by his advocate, Prem Prakash, Kishore served a legal notice to the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC). The notice holds the civic body accountable for:

Kishore has demanded Rs 5 lakh in compensation, with the warning that legal proceedings in the High Court or Lokayukta will follow if no response is received within 15 days.

Kishore, being a proactive citizen, has previously approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over similar issues, urging drain cleaning and removal of encroachments in Vasundhara. For him, this is not just about his car—it’s about larger systemic failures.

“This case is symbolic of the deeper problem: unchecked urbanization, poor drainage planning, and a lack of accountability from civic bodies.”

Kishore stated.

When approached for comment, Municipal Commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik dismissed the claim,

“If his vehicle broke down, why didn’t others? It rained heavily that day across NCR. No other such complaints have come in.”

However, many residents disagree. Locals from Eastern Ghaziabad areas like Indirapuram, Vaishali, and Vasundhara confirmed that waterlogging is a recurring issue, worsened by clogged and encroached drains.

Roy Tapan Bharti, a resident of Sector 16 in Vasundhara, said,

“Sanitation staffers clean drains but leave the sludge on roadsides, which gets washed back during rains. This is not just negligence; it’s a complete lack of planning.”
