New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra sparked controversy in the Lok Sabha on Friday when she referred to the death of a judicial officer.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju accused her of discussing a matter already settled by the Supreme Court and warned her of “appropriate parliamentary action.”

During a debate marking 75 years of the Indian Constitution, Moitra’s remarks led to significant disruption, resulting in the House being adjourned twice.

Speaker Om Birla stated he has requested Moitra to verify her claims and assured opposition members that he would address their concerns regarding Rijiju’s threatening remarks towards a female MP.

BJP member Nishikant Dubey first raised the issue following Moitra’s speech, alleging that she had insinuated something about the judicial officer’s death.

In response, Moitra posted on X, asserting,

“All those reporting that ‘Parliament Affairs Minister warned me – it is he who will face action for threatening me! His remarks to be deleted – not mine!'”

Rijiju reiterated that the case concerning the judicial officer’s death is closed and described Moitra’s comments as very serious.

Emphasizing the need for appropriate action against her allegations. He stated,

“You cannot escape. You are setting a very wrong precedent,”

Upon reconvening, opposition members, including Saugata Roy from TMC and K C Venugopal from Congress, protested Rijiju’s language, highlighting that the Speaker is the custodian of the Lok Sabha.

Venugopal remarked,

“You are the custodian. You have the powers to delete, expunge… The parliamentary affairs minister took the entire custody of the House and he virtually threatened the lady member.”

He demanded an apology from Rijiju or the expunging of his remarks.

Roy accused Rijiju of making a “brazen effort” to intimidate Moitra. The Speaker expressed regret over the personal allegations exchanged and urged members to engage in a constructive discussion about constitutional issues. He confirmed he will review Moitra’s comments and take necessary actions based on his findings.

Mahua Moitra is an Indian politician and Member of Parliament for the Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal. She is associated with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and is recognized for her incisive rhetoric and strong stances on numerous political and social matters. Previously an investment banker, she shifted her career to politics and has established herself as a prominent critic of government policies and actions. Moitra often garners attention for her passionate speeches and debates in Parliament.
