Lawyers vs LG: Delhi Bar Gives Govt 48 Hours To Withdraw Video Deposition Order, Threatens Street Protests If Not Done

NEW DELHI: The Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations of Delhi has strongly opposed the recent notification issued by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena, permitting Delhi Police officials to present evidence via video conferencing directly from police stations in court cases.

The Committee has given the government 48 hours to withdraw this order, warning of strong protests if their demand is not met.

An urgent meeting of the Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations was convened today, where leaders of all bar associations unanimously condemned the LG’s notification. The resolution passed during the meeting outlined the following decisions:

The Committee described the LG’s order as being against lawyers, against the judicial system, and public interest. According to the release, allowing police depositions to be recorded from police stations will undermine the judicial process, paralyze trial proceedings, and obstruct the delivery of justice.

Lawyers argue that in-person testimony is a crucial part of trial proceedings, ensuring transparency, cross-examination, and accountability in the courtroom. Shifting this process to police stations through video conferencing, they claim, compromises the fairness of trials and weakens the justice delivery mechanism.

The Coordination Committee emphasized that the Bar of Delhi stands united in its opposition and will not allow such an “anti-justice measure” to be implemented under any circumstances. The Committee has warned that if the notification is not withdrawn within the given timeframe, the legal fraternity will take to the streets in protest.
