The Bar Council of India has placed interim suspension on advocate Deepak Tyagi over allegations of misbehaving with returning officer Talwant Singh during the Bar Council of Delhi elections, calling such acts a grave threat to professional dignity and electoral integrity.

The Bar Council of India placed advocate Deepak Tyagi under interim suspension following allegations that he misbehaved with retired Justice Talwant Singh, the returning officer for the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) elections.
According to the complaint, on polling day Justice Singh was heading toward the Delhi High Court entry gate after receiving reports of Model Code of Conduct violations when Tyagi allegedly tried to manhandle him, rallied a group of lawyers and chanted slogans against the election authorities.
The BCI said in a press statement,
“Pending further proceedings, and having regard to the gravity of the allegations, the reported nature of the conduct, the availability of video footage, and the necessity of protecting both the disciplinary process and the election process, Shri Deepak Tyagi, Advocate, has been placed under interim suspension from practice, with immediate effect, subject to consideration by the competent Disciplinary Committee on first listing,”
Tyagi has also been prohibited from entering or loitering near the counting venue or otherwise interfering with the vote-counting process, which is due to begin on March 7.
The BCI warned that any breach of these instructions will be regarded as an aggravating act of misconduct.

The action follows a suo motu complaint submitted to the BCI by the Special Committee of the BCD about the episode.
The Bar body said,
“Any misbehaviour with, attempted manhandling of, intimidation of, or interference with the Returning Officer or the election process during a statutory Bar election strikes at the dignity of the legal profession and the integrity of the electoral process. Such conduct, if established, would amount to grave professional and other misconduct under the Advocates Act, 1961 and the Bar Council of India Rules,”
The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) is the statutory body representing advocates practising in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It is constituted under the Advocates Act, 1961 and its members are elected by enrolled advocates.
