Kolkata: In a decisive move against the spread of fake news surrounding the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Kolkata Police lodged 10 First Information Reports (FIRs) and initiated 35 cases specifically targeting false information related to the incident.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 200 notices have been issued, urging individuals to cease the deliberate dissemination of misinformation that could hinder justice, provoke violence, or increase public unrest.

The FIRs include charges of criminal conspiracy and applicable sections under the IT Act and other cognizable offenses. In the wake of the tragic incident, social media has become a breeding ground for fake news, further complicating the already sensitive case.

Those named in the FIRs or involved in these cases include journalists, politicians, doctors, and other social media users. The offenses range from sharing inaccurate data, videos, and voice notes to circulating alleged post-mortem reports and other claims related to the case.

According to a senior officer of Kolkata Police, the number of FIRs and cases is expected to rise as more notices are issued and strict legal actions are enforced.

According to another senior officer of the West Bengal police,

“The spread of lies and distortions of facts can have severe repercussions for both justice and social harmony, “

He added,

“As the investigation into the crime progresses, false narratives and unverified claims have inundated platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp. Some posts are attempting to distort the facts of the investigation and even malign the woman’s character. We are now compelled to take decisive action to highlight the serious risks posed by unverified and unsubstantiated misinformation, especially in such a highly sensitive case.”

The senior officer stated,

“The crackdown is necessary to serve as a clear reminder of the dangers of unverified and malicious content, highlighting the importance of responsible communication, particularly in the context of such a heinous crime,”

This decisive move by the Kolkata Police highlights the grave risks posed by the unchecked spread of misinformation in sensitive criminal cases and reinforces the need for stringent measures to ensure that justice is served without interference from false and misleading narratives.
