Kerala: Kollam in Kerala is set to become the first city in the country to launch a 24×7 online court, revolutionizing the way legal cases are processed. Starting Wednesday, November 20, this innovative digital courtroom will provide round-the-clock access to the justice system, allowing litigants to file and resolve cases entirely online, without the need for physical presence, paperwork, or in-person hearings.

Initially handling cases related to cheque dishonour under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the online court aims to streamline legal processes, reduce case backlogs, and provide quicker resolutions.

Cases will be managed across the three Judicial First Class Courts and the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Kollam, with the platform supporting both hearings and case management.

In a break from tradition, all case filings will be done via a dedicated online portal, enabling litigants to submit documents digitally and eliminating the need for paper-based filings. This paperless approach ensures that the legal process can be initiated at any time, day or night, without requiring a visit to the courthouse.

The online court’s flexibility is one of its key features. Operating 24/7, it allows litigants to file cases and access court services from anywhere, which is particularly beneficial for those with work commitments, distance challenges, or personal constraints. Lawyers and litigants can also attend hearings and submit evidence electronically, simplifying the process and saving time.

Summonses will be delivered electronically to police stations, ensuring prompt notification, while bail applications can also be submitted online. Court fees will be processed through secure e-payment systems, making financial transactions simpler for all parties involved.

Additionally, the system will offer real-time case updates, enabling both lawyers and litigants to track their cases and stay informed on proceedings. This transparency and efficiency not only make the system faster but also more accessible and accountable.

This trailblazing initiative marks a major step in modernizing India’s judicial system and improving access to justice. By eliminating the need for physical attendance, the online court removes barriers for many individuals, allowing greater participation in legal proceedings. It is anticipated that this model will be a blueprint for other regions, shaping the future of legal proceedings in India.
