NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of Patna High Court Chief Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi to the apex court of India. If approved by the Central government, Justice Pancholi is set to be on a long and distinguished tenure at the Supreme Court, shaping Indian jurisprudence for nearly a decade.
Justice Pancholi, currently serving as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court, is poised to have an eight-year tenure at the Supreme Court, one of the longest possible in recent times. Notably, he is projected to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in October 2031, following the retirement of Justice Joymalya Bagchi. His tenure as CJI is expected to last over 1.5 years, giving him a crucial opportunity to influence the judiciary and key legal decisions.
Justice Pancholi will be the third sitting Supreme Court judge from the Gujarat High Court, joining Justices JB Pardiwala and NV Anjaria. Justice Pardiwala is also slated to serve as CJI from May 2028 to August 2030, highlighting the consistent representation of Gujarat jurists in the highest echelons of the Indian judiciary.
Born on May 28, 1968, Justice Pancholi joined the Bar in September 1991 and began practicing at the Gujarat High Court. His judicial career began with his elevation as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court on October 1, 2014, followed by confirmation as a permanent judge on June 10, 2016. He was transferred to the Patna High Court in July 2023, where he has served as Chief Justice, further cementing his reputation for judiciousness and integrity.
If the elevation is confirmed, Justice Pancholi will serve at the Supreme Court until May 27, 2033, retiring as the Chief Justice of India. His long tenure offers continuity, stability, and significant jurisprudential contributions to the country’s legal framework.
