Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, 1st Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, Passes Away at 78

INDIA: Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, who was the first Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court and a highly respected judge, passed away on February 15 at the age of 78.

He was born on September 10, 1947, and spent his early years studying in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Later, he completed his law degree (LL.B) from Delhi University. After that, he became a lawyer and registered with the Delhi Bar Council on July 23, 1970.

He started practicing law in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and eventually took on the important role of the State’s Advocate General.

His journey as a judge began in 1990 when he was appointed as a judge in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Later, in 1996, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court.

In the year 2000, when Bihar was divided to create the new state of Jharkhand, he was given the responsibility of being the Acting Chief Justice of the newly formed Jharkhand High Court. Shortly after that, on December 5, 2000, he was officially appointed as the first Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

His judicial career continued as he was transferred to the Himachal Pradesh High Court in March 2003, where he served as the Chief Justice until February 2008.

On February 2, 2008, he took charge as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. He held this esteemed position until his retirement on September 9, 2009.
