The Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, has also published a notification in the Official Gazette on 9th May 2025 confirming this.

New Delhi, 9th May 2025 – The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has officially announced that Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been nominated as the new Executive Chairman of NALSA.

This important nomination has been made by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, by using her powers under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. The nomination will take effect from 14th May 2025.
The Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, has also published a notification in the Official Gazette on 9th May 2025 confirming this.
Justice Surya Kant will take over the post from Hon’ble Mr. Justice B.R. Gavai, another senior judge of the Supreme Court, who served as the previous Executive Chairman of NALSA. As per the well-established tradition, this position is generally given to “the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court of India.“
Currently Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant is the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
Before becoming the Executive Chairman of NALSA, Justice Surya Kant has already made valuable contributions to promoting legal aid and reforms in India. He has always strongly supported initiatives that help “advance access to justice” and believes in strengthening the system to make legal services better for all.
He is recognised as “a strong proponent of legal aid and institutional reforms in the justice delivery system.”
As the new Executive Chairman, Justice Surya Kant will now lead the mission of NALSA, which is to provide free and easy legal help to people, especially the poor, disadvantaged and those who cannot afford lawyers.

His appointment is expected to enhance NALSA’s work in fulfilling its responsibility under Article 39-A of the Indian Constitution, which ensures that “justice is not denied to any citizen due to financial or social barriers.”
