Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns with immediate effect citing medical advice. In his letter to President Murmu, he invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

New Delhi: Today, on July 21, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from his post, citing health-related reasons. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Mr. Dhankhar explained that his decision to step down was guided by medical advice and the need to prioritise his well-being.
His resignation comes into effect immediately under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India, which deals with the resignation of the Vice President.
In his letter, Mr. Dhankhar wrote,
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
Vice President Dhankhar, who also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers, and the Members of Parliament.
In his farewell note, he acknowledged the support and respect he received during his tenure.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency – the Hon’ble President of India for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure.”
Further, he expressed appreciation towards the Prime Minister and the Union Cabinet for their continued guidance and cooperation. He noted that his time in office was enriched by their leadership.
“I express my deep gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office.”
Mr. Dhankhar also thanked all the Members of Parliament for their trust, affection, and warmth during his role as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He described these memories as something he would always carry with him.
“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished at and embedded in my memory. I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy.”
Reflecting on his term, Mr. Dhankhar expressed satisfaction in witnessing India’s growth, development, and rising global stature.
He described the period as transformative and historic, noting the privilege of serving the nation during such a crucial time.
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor.”
He concluded his message by expressing confidence in India’s bright future, pride in the country’s global achievements, and optimism about the journey ahead.
“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”
Mr. Dhankhar, a seasoned politician and former Governor of West Bengal, had taken office as the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022.
His resignation now creates a vacancy at the second-highest constitutional post in the country. As per procedure, the President will notify the vacancy, and the Election Commission of India will begin preparations for the election of a new Vice President.
His resignation under Article 67(a) is in line with constitutional provisions, which state that the Vice President may resign by writing addressed to the President.
This step, though unexpected, appears to have been taken in good faith on health grounds, respecting the constitutional framework and democratic responsibilities.
