NEW DELHI: India is currently grappling with increasing security threats from neighboring countries, a concern that requires serious attention and action. Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra emphasized the importance of being vigilant, drawing lessons from the political upheaval in Bangladesh that led to the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government.
Speaking on Frida(23rdAugust), Mishra highlighted the critical situation in Bangladesh, stating that the lack of respect for freedom among its people has resulted in a dangerous environment where the security of all communities is now at risk.
He remarked-
“Bagal me Bangladesh me dekhiye kya ho raha hai. Unko azadi mili thi lekin unhone kadra nahi kari. Aaj waha Hindu hi nahi par sab khatre me hain. Azadi ka mahatva unhone nahi samjha” (“Look at what’s happening in Bangladesh. They gained their freedom but failed to value it. Now, not just Hindus but everyone is under threat there because they didn’t grasp the significance of their freedom”).
Mishra’s comments underline a growing concern in India about the potential spillover effects of instability in neighboring countries. He urged the legal fraternity in India to play a proactive role in educating the public about these threats, both internal and external, to national security.

He stated-
“Jo bhi videshi takate hain… Kuch dushan jo hamare padosi hai. Jinse hamare desh ko khatra hai andar aur bahar se use bas vakil samaj hi samajhega aur saare samaj ko samjhaega” (“There are foreign forces, including some neighboring enemies, that threaten our country both externally and internally. It’s the legal community that can fully grasp these threats and convey their significance to the wider public.”).
These remarks were made during the inauguration of a new block at the Bar Council of Delhi Bhawan. Mishra’s concerns are not isolated; they reflect broader anxieties within India’s leadership about the region’s stability and the role of the legal community in safeguarding national interests.
In addition to Mishra, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who attended the event, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing issues pertinent to the legal profession. He disclosed that the Central government is actively working on resolving insurance-related concerns for lawyers and that discussions with Mishra on the Advocates Protection Act are ongoing. This act is seen as crucial for ensuring the safety and security of legal professionals who often find themselves at the forefront of challenging legal battles.
Further highlighting the challenges faced by the legal profession, Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Manmohan voiced his concerns about the ethical standards within the profession. He pointed out that ethical compromises have become more frequent, which has, in turn, affected the quality and integrity of legal practice. Justice Manmohan urged the legal community to uphold the sanctity of justice, stating-
“The stream of justice is sacred. It is our duty to steer the bar in a direction that keeps the stream of justice unpolluted and pure. The future of the legal profession heavily relies on upholding this principle.”
These comments reflect the pressing need for introspection within the legal community, which plays a pivotal role in the functioning of democracy and the rule of law in India. As the nation faces multifaceted challenges from both within and outside its borders, the role of legal professionals in maintaining ethical standards and safeguarding national interests has never been more critical.
Mishra’s selection as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance’s Rajya Sabha candidate from Bihar underscores the importance placed on legal experts in the political arena, particularly in the context of national security and legal reforms.
