A top committee in Gujarat met to prepare the state’s Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The discussion covered important legal and social points of the new law. Officials talked about ways to make personal laws the same for all communities. This step is seen as an important move towards legal changes in the state.

A five-member high-level committee, led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Desai, convened at Gujarat Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the drafting of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) legislation for Gujarat.

The committee engaged in extensive discussions regarding the objectives, scope, and implementation of the proposed UCC for the state.

As stated in the release, the committee comprised retired senior IAS officer C L Meena, Advocate R C Kodekar, former Vice Chancellor Dakshesh Thakar, and social activist Geetaben Shroff.

During their discussions, the committee articulated its vision for a thorough review of existing laws, emphasizing the need for inclusive consultations with various stakeholders. The aim is to create a progressive and equitable legal framework that promotes justice, equality, and social harmony for all citizens of Gujarat.

The committee stressed the importance of inclusivity, judicial fairness, and uniformity in personal laws, with a focus on ensuring equal rights for women and children while enhancing the state’s social fabric.

The high-level committee is set to submit its report to the Gujarat government, which is eagerly awaiting its recommendations.

These findings are expected to significantly influence the state’s future legal framework.

The Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a set of consistent personal laws applicable to all citizens, regardless of religion, gender, or caste, covering areas such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.

Previously, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced the committee’s formation to evaluate the need for a UCC in the state and ensure equal rights for all citizens, in line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision.

The committee is expected to deliver its report within 45 days, after which the state government will take appropriate actions based on its conclusions. This initiative follows Uttarakhand’s implementation of the UCC as the first state to do so.

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a proposed law in India that seeks to replace personal laws based on religious scriptures and customs with a common set of laws governing every citizen of the country, irrespective of religion. It is intended to provide uniformity in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance.

Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Indian Constitution states that the State shall endeavor to secure a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens. However, Directive Principles are non-justiciable, meaning they cannot be enforced by the courts.
