Goa: A Goa court issued a notice on Tuesday to AAP MP Sanjay Singh in a Rs 100 crore defamation case filed by Sulakshana Sawant, wife of Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. The court has directed Singh to submit his reply by January 10, 2025.
The defamation suit stems from allegations made by Singh during a recent press conference in Delhi, where he reportedly named Sulakshana Sawant in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam in Goa.
Sulakshana Sawant filed the suit in the civil court at Bicholim, seeking Rs 100 crore in damages and an unconditional apology from Singh. According to the complaint, she urged the court to direct Singh to:
- Publish a clarification and apology stating that his allegations are false and baseless.
- Refrain from making further defamatory statements about her on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
Her legal team also emphasized the need to protect her reputation from “malicious and unfounded claims.”
Complaints from job aspirants in Goa have alleged that individuals demanded large sums of money in exchange for promises of government jobs.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant denied any wrongdoing and stated that “the state police are conducting a transparent investigation into the alleged cash-for-jobs scam.”
The ad-hoc civil judge, after hearing Sulakshana Sawant’s arguments, issued a notice to Sanjay Singh, with the matter scheduled for the next hearing on January 10, 2025.
