Election Commission Clarifies Duplicate EPIC Numbers | No Fake Voters, Unique ID System to Be Implemented

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has responded to concerns regarding duplicate EPIC numbers, clarifying that identical voter ID numbers do not indicate fake or duplicate voters. Some voters from different states or union territories (UTs) may have the same EPIC number, but their demographic details, Assembly Constituency, and polling booth are different.

The duplicate EPIC numbers occurred due to a decentralized, manual system used before the electoral roll database was centralized on the ERONET platform. Some State and UT CEO offices used the same alphanumeric series, leading to the possibility of identical EPIC numbers in different Assembly Constituencies across states.

Despite this, the ECI assured that no voter can cast a vote outside their designated polling station, and the EPIC number does not allow voting in multiple locations.

To eliminate duplicate EPIC numbers and ensure uniqueness, the Election Commission has decided to assign unique EPIC numbers to all registered voters. The ERONET 2.0 platform will be updated to facilitate this process.

The EC reassured voters that any cases of duplicate EPIC numbers will be rectified by issuing a unique voter ID number.

This clarification comes amid social media discussions and media reports raising concerns about the integrity of voter records. The ECI reaffirmed its commitment to free and fair elections and urged voters to trust the electoral process.
