Having recently retired from the judiciary, Justice Chandrachud shared that he is content with his life as a private citizen.
“I am enjoying life away from public responsibilities,” he said, emphasizing his preference for a quieter lifestyle after a distinguished judicial career.
This statement was made to address ongoing speculation about his future plans. Justice Chandrachud’s clarification ensures the public receives accurate information directly from him.
The position of NHRC chairperson has been vacant since former Supreme Court judge, Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra, completed his term on June 1.
On December 18, a high-powered committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened to select the next chairperson of the NHRC, according to sources. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi, as leaders of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, respectively, also attended the meeting.
Justice Mishra served as the eighth chairperson of the rights panel after being appointed in June 2021.
Under the law governing the NHRC, the selection committee for the chairperson is headed by the prime minister and includes the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the home minister, the leaders of opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
Following Justice Mishra’s retirement, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, a member of the NHRC, was appointed the acting chairperson.
Typically, a former Chief Justice of India or a retired Supreme Court judge is appointed as the NHRC chairperson by the president on the recommendation of the selection committee. Former CJIs H L Dattu and K G Balakrishnan have previously led the rights body.
