NEW DELHI: In the Lodhi Garden area of New Delhi, a police team was attacked by protesters opposing the Supreme Court’s directive to remove stray dogs from localities across Delhi-NCR and relocate them to shelter homes. The incident has raised concerns over law and order and the safety of law enforcement personnel.
The confrontation occurred on Wednesday evening when police reached Lodhi Garden following reports of an unauthorized protest. The crowd had gathered without official permission, prompting officers to attempt to disperse them.
During the clash, the Station House Officer (SHO) of a New Delhi police station was physically assaulted. A video circulating on social media shows two individuals charging at the SHO and attacking him. Other police personnel on the spot were pushed, while the crowd could be heard divided in opinion, some chanting “maaro maaro” (beat them), and others cautioning “maaro mat” (don’t beat them).
Delhi Police have confirmed that legal proceedings are being initiated against those involved in the assault. A separate case has also been registered in connection with an earlier protest near Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place against the same Supreme Court order. This case has been filed under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant.
The Delhi Police continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to prevent further escalation in the city.
