NEW DELHI: In Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, on Sunday afternoon, Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Navjot Singh (52), lost his life when his motorcycle was hit by a speeding BMW. His wife, Sandeep Kaur, suffered multiple injuries and remains under medical care.
The BMW was allegedly driven by 38-year-old Gaganpreet Kaur, wife of businessman Parikshit Makkar. She was arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sent to two days of judicial custody by Duty Magistrate Akanksha Singh on Monday.
According to police reports, the luxury BMW was moving at high speed when it first struck a divider, lost balance, and then rammed into Singh’s motorcycle. The impact was so severe that the two-wheeler was flung into a nearby DTC bus.
Singh died on the spot, while his wife was left with serious injuries. The accused, her husband, two children, and a maid were also in the car at the time.
The Controversy Over Hospital Transfer
One of the biggest questions surrounding this case is why the victims were taken to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, almost 19 km away from the accident site, instead of being rushed to a nearby hospital.
“Asked why she did not take them to a nearby hospital, during questioning, she claimed she panicked, saying she knew only this hospital as her children were admitted there during Covid. The blood sample report to ascertain if she was driving under the influence is awaited,”
said a police officer.
The FIR alleges that:
- The accused and her husband took Navjot Singh and his wife to a hospital linked to their relatives.
- Despite their critical condition, Singh and his wife were not given immediate priority in treatment.
- Singh was declared “brought dead” at Nulife Hospital.
Police sources are also investigating whether there was tampering with the medical reports of the accused, who was treated at the same hospital.
Bail Plea and Legal Proceedings
Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa, representing Gaganpreet, opposed the police’s demand for custody, arguing:
- The FIR was delayed by 10 hours.
- CCTV footage shows that the BMW hit a divider first, indirectly leading to the collision.
- There was no intent or knowledge that her actions would cause death.
- The accused herself was injured and panicked, which led her to rush the victims to a hospital she was familiar with.
The court has issued notices to the Delhi Police and the victim’s family on her bail application, which will be heard on September 17.
Charges Against the Accused
The case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS):
- Section 281 – Rash driving on a public way
- Section 125B – Acts endangering the life or personal safety of others
- Section 105 – Culpable homicide not amounting to murder
- Section 238 – Causing the disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen an offender
The police are also awaiting blood test reports to determine if Gaganpreet was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Family and Background
The BMW is registered under Parikshit Makkar’s name. The Makkar family resides in Rajouri Garden, West Delhi. Parikshit runs a business dealing in horse leather saddles, belts, and covers, while Gaganpreet’s father operates a grocery business in East Delhi.
