Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said Rohtak shaped his legal journey and praised the Bar for strengthening legal thought in India. He also stressed the need to uphold public confidence in the justice delivery system and modernise court infrastructure.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday said that Rohtak has always been a source of inspiration for him and that the Rohtak Bar Association has made an important contribution in shaping strong legal thinking in the country.
He was speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised by the District Bar Association at the judicial complex in Rohtak, where he addressed judicial officers, advocates and members of the legal fraternity.
In his speech, the CJI stressed the need for both the Bar and the Bench to work together to maintain and strengthen public trust in the justice delivery system. He reminded lawyers and judges that the credibility of courts depends on discipline, integrity and commitment to justice.
Justice Surya Kant said the
“lawyer within him has always remained alive”,
irrespective of the positions he has held. Sharing his personal connection with Rohtak, he said his relationship with the local Bar is emotional and meaningful. He added that he had always wished to return to the city because it played a major role in shaping his career. He recalled that he studied law in Rohtak and drew inspiration from the Bar, where he learnt discipline and gained in-depth understanding of complex legal issues.
The event began with the traditional lighting of the lamp. During his address, the Chief Justice also spoke about the need to improve judicial infrastructure in India. He informed the gathering that construction work for the new Supreme Court building is currently underway and will be completed in three phases.
According to him, the new complex will include 34 additional courtrooms and will be able to meet the requirements of the judiciary for the next 50 years. He also referred to the idea of integrated court complexes and suggested that the government and the Bar should think about setting up such modern facilities to meet future demands.
District and Sessions Judge Ajay Tewatia honoured the CJI by presenting him with a traditional turban and a memento as a mark of respect. Administrative Judge Vikas Suri and Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta also presented commemorative souvenirs to him. In a special gesture, Justice Surya Kant signed a portrait gifted by the lawyers, which will now be displayed in the Bar room as a memory of his visit.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi, Haryana Minister for Cooperation, Elections, Prisons, Tourism and Heritage Dr Arvind Sharma, senior High Court judges, district officials and members of the Bar Association.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Justice inaugurated the newly constructed Golden Jubilee Gate at Maharshi Dayanand University. On this occasion, he also planted a sapling and highlighted the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development.
The visit of the Chief Justice to Rohtak not only reflected his deep personal connection with the city but also sent a strong message about unity between the Bar and the Bench, strengthening judicial infrastructure and maintaining public confidence in India’s justice system.
