BRAZIL: The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is currently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, attending a significant conference involving the heads of Supreme Courts from G-20 countries. In his address on Tuesday, the CJI praised the role of Indian journalists and emphasized the importance of technology in enhancing the judicial system.

The CJI highlighted how technology is being leveraged to prevent the spread of misinformation and to ensure the public understands legal proceedings accurately.

He stated-

“Technology is being harnessed to combat misinformation and misinterpretation of legal proceedings, ensuring public awareness of precise court procedures and rulings.”

Reflecting on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CJI noted India’s speedy adaptation to virtual court modes.

“When faced with challenges in conducting physical court proceedings, India swiftly transitioned to virtual modes.”

– he said.

This transition enabled the judiciary to continue its operations without interruption. The CJI revealed that over seven and a half lakh cases have been heard in India through video conferencing, underscoring the system’s resilience and adaptability.

he CJI also mentioned that many significant cases, especially constitutional ones, have been live-streamed on YouTube, enhancing transparency and public accessibility.

“The hearings of numerous crucial cases, particularly those of constitutional significance, were also broadcast live on YouTube.”

-he shared.

Addressing the democratic nature of the Indian judicial process, the CJI remarked-

“The courts in India do not enforce their rulings on the populace but resolve cases through democratic processes.”

He emphasized the judiciary’s commitment to transparency, adding-

“Indian courts are embracing transparency in their procedures.”

The CJI acknowledged the crucial role journalists play in a democracy, particularly in conveying accurate information about court decisions to the public.

“In the Indian democracy, journalists have effectively disseminated accurate information regarding court verdicts to the public.”

– he said.

Discussing judicial efficiency, the CJI stressed that it should extend beyond the performance of individual judges and encompass the entire judicial process.

“When discussing judicial efficiency, it’s important to broaden our perspective beyond just the outcomes. Efficiency encompasses not only the results but also the underlying processes.”

-he stated.

He called for a comprehensive approach to ensure that justice is delivered timely and effectively, highlighting the judiciary’s responsibility towards the common people.

The summit in Rio de Janeiro also includes representatives from the European Union and African Union member countries, making it a globally significant event.
