The Centre is planning to implement 33% women’s reservation in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Linked to the delimitation process, it proposes one-third seats for women in Parliament and assemblies.

The Centre plans to introduce a 33 percent reservation for women in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections, as reported by sources.
This initiative, known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, is connected to the delimitation process.
It aims to allocate one-third of the seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in the next election.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, commonly referred to as the women’s reservation Bill, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 19, 2023.
The government sources told,
“The Census has been announced, and the other steps will follow. The women’s reservation Bill is linked to the delimitation process. We are aiming to roll it out in the next election,”
According to the Constitution, the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies will take effect after the delimitation exercise is based on data from the first Census conducted after the Act is enacted.
Delimitation is the process of redrawing electoral boundaries and determining the number of seats for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. It also involves reserving seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
For delimitation to occur after the next Census, Parliament must pass a Delimitation Act, which could lead to an increase in Lok Sabha seats. Article 82 of the Constitution requires the adjustment of seats after each Census.
Earlier this month, the Centre announced that the data collection for the Census, including caste enumeration, would begin next year, with completion expected by March 1, 2027.
To implement the women’s reservation in the next Lok Sabha elections, delimitation must be finished on time. Government sources indicated that the Census data will be available more quickly than before, thanks to technological advancements. T
he enumeration will be done digitally using mobile apps for data collection, and a central portal will manage the information.

Delimitation has been a controversial topic, leading to disputes between the BJP and the DMK. The idea of allocating seats based on population figures raises concerns for southern states, as their share of India’s population has decreased from 24 percent in 1971 to 19.7 percent in 2023.
However, in February, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that the southern states would not lose any seats on a pro-rata basis.
