NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai will deliver the 30th Justice Sunanda Bhandare Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 5:30 PM.
The event will take place at the Multipurpose Hall, India International Centre (IIC), located at 40, Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi.
This year’s lecture is themed “Justice for All: Building a Gender Equal and Inclusive India.” CJI Gavai will explore how India’s justice system can promote equality, inclusivity, and access to justice for all citizens, with a particular focus on gender equity.
The memorial lecture series, instituted in memory of Justice Sunanda Bhandare, celebrates her lasting contribution to women’s empowerment, gender justice, and social equality. Over the years, it has featured distinguished jurists, scholars, and public figures discussing issues of national and social importance.
The Justice Sunanda Bhandare Foundation organizes the lecture annually to continue her legacy of advocating for women’s rights and equitable justice.

About CJI B R Gavai
Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is the son of R.S. Gavai, a prominent Ambedkarite leader and former Governor of Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala. He completed his B.A. LL.B. from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law, Nagpur University.
Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985, training under Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale, former Advocate General and Bombay High Court Judge. He practiced at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, later serving as Assistant Government Pleader, Additional Public Prosecutor, and eventually Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor by 2000.
Appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003, he became a permanent judge in 2005, serving for 16 years across multiple benches. In May 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India, becoming the first Scheduled Caste judge on the bench in nine years.
Justice Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on 14 May 2025 and is set to retire on 23 November 2025.
