His resignation follows increasing internal dissent within the BJP’s Manipur unit. The party faced a potential no-confidence motion by the Congress, which could have led to a floor test in the Assembly. To prevent further instability, Biren Singh handed over his resignation to the Governor on Monday evening.

Manipur: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped down from his position after two years of ethnic violence in the state. His resignation comes amid rising public anger, an ongoing Supreme Court investigation, and a no-confidence motion planned by the Congress party.

Reacting to the resignation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted on X “The resignation of CM Biren Singh shows that mounting public pressure, the SC investigation and the no-confidence motion by the Congress have forced a reckoning.”

He also accused the outgoing CM of dividing the people of Manipur and blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allowing him to continue despite the unrest.

“For nearly two years, BJP’s CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur. PM Modi allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and the destruction of the idea of India in Manipur.”

Meanwhile, a fresh controversy erupted when a member of the Kuki community approached the Supreme Court, accusing Biren Singh of inciting violence in the state. The complaint is based on leaked audio tapes allegedly featuring the Chief Minister’s voice.

A forensic examination by Truth Labs, an independent forensic laboratory, found that “93 per cent of the audio tapes matched Mr Singh’s voice.”

Taking the matter seriously, the Supreme Court has now asked for a report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory to verify the authenticity of these tapes.

The state has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023. Clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities led to devastating consequences:

  • Over 200 people lost their lives.
  • Nearly 60,000 individuals were displaced, leaving thousands homeless.
