NEW DELHI: A woman from Siwan, Bihar, has found herself at the centre of a national debate, and on the T-shirts of Opposition MPs.
The INDIA bloc MPs staged a protest over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the name Minta Devi, a voter who, according to the Election Commission’s voter list, is an astonishing 124 years old.
When approached by the media, Minta Devi appeared more confused than flattered by the sudden attention.
“I came to know about this 2–4 days back. Who are they (Opposition MPs) to me? Who is Priyanka Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi to me? Who gave them the right to wear T-shirts featuring me?”
She made it clear that she neither authorised nor appreciated being turned into a protest symbol.
“I think there are discrepancies in the voter list. I have not received any call from the administration. Why are they becoming my well-wishers over my age? This should not be done, I do not want this.”
According to Minta Devi, her Aadhaar card lists her date of birth as 15 July 1990, making her 34 years old, not 124. She alleges that her details were incorrectly entered during voter registration.
“Whoever entered the details, did they do so with their eyes closed?”
she remarked sarcastically.
In a pointed jab at government bureaucracy, Minta Devi questioned the inconsistency in official records.
“If I am 124 years old in the eyes of the Government, why are they not giving me old age pension?”
