The Election Commission has announced that persons left out from Bihar’s draft voter list can now submit their Aadhaar card for inclusion of their names, following a Supreme Court directive validating Aadhaar as proof of identity in electoral roll.

The Election Commission (EC) announced that individuals omitted from Bihar’s draft voter list can provide a copy of their Aadhaar card to have their names included in the electoral roll, following a Supreme Court directive allowing the card as valid proof of identity.

In its statement, the EC clarified that claims and objections must be addressed by the relevant electoral registration officer after a minimum of seven days from the verification of eligibility documents.

Additionally, the EC emphasized that under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) orders, no names may be removed from the draft list published on August 1 without a formal speaking order from the electoral registration officer (ERO).

This process must include a thorough inquiry and offer a fair opportunity for response.

A list of the 65 lakh individuals excluded from the draft is accessible on the websites of Bihar’s district magistrates.

The poll panel stated,

“Aggrieved persons may submit their claims along with a copy of their Aadhaar card,”

Earlier, on 14th August, The Supreme Court announced during Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) case, that individuals whose names have been removed from the state’s voter lists can use their Aadhaar cards to contest this deletion.

Previously, the Election Commission had resisted accepting Aadhaar as valid, arguing that while it serves as proof of identity, it does not confirm citizenship.
