Advocates Amitabh Rai & Rajiv Lochan Shukla Sworn In as Judges of Allahabad High Court

UTTAR PRADESH: Advocates Amitabh Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla were sworn in as Additional Judges of the Allahabad High Court on Monday, September 8, 2025. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Arun Bhansali during a solemn ceremony held in the Chief Justice’s Courtroom.

The Central Government’s Ministry of Law and Justice had officially notified their appointments on September 5, 2025. With their elevation, the working strength of the Allahabad High Court has now increased to 95 judges, against its sanctioned strength of 160.

The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of other sitting judges of the High Court, senior advocates, members of the High Court Bar Association, and several dignitaries, underscoring the importance of the occasion.

Before their elevation, both Justice Amitabh Rai and Justice Rajiv Lochan Shukla had been practicing as advocates at the Allahabad High Court, specializing in diverse areas of law. Their vast experience and professional expertise are expected to contribute significantly in addressing the ever-growing caseload of the Allahabad High Court, one of India’s oldest and largest High Courts.

Background of the Appointment:

The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on March 25, 2025, had recommended the elevation of both advocates to the Allahabad High Court. After receiving the President’s approval, the Ministry has now issued the formal notification, thereby clearing the way for their swearing-in.

The Supreme Court Collegium has also recommended 26 more names for appointment as judges of the Allahabad High Court. This recommendation is currently pending consideration before the Central Government.
