Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal as a Trinamool Congress candidate. With this victory, she becomes India’s first openly queer Member of Parliament, marking a historic moment for representation in Indian politics.

Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy has been elected as a Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal. The well-known constitutional lawyer was nominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and secured the seat without facing any contest in the election held on March 9.

With this development, Guruswamy has created history by becoming the country’s first openly queer Member of Parliament. Her election marks a significant moment for representation and diversity in India’s political and parliamentary landscape.

The Rajya Sabha elections in West Bengal saw multiple candidates winning unopposed. Along with Guruswamy, Trinamool Congress candidates Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, and Koel Mallick were also elected to the Upper House of Parliament without any opposition. From the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rahul Sinha was also elected unopposed.

Menaka Guruswamy is widely known for her work as a constitutional lawyer and for appearing in several important cases before the Supreme Court of India. Over the years, she has built a strong reputation in the legal community for her work in constitutional law, civil liberties, and public interest litigation.

Her election to the Rajya Sabha also comes shortly after she represented the Trinamool Congress in a legal dispute concerning searches conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Guruswamy had appeared before the court in proceedings challenging the ED’s searches at the premises of political consulting firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), which is associated with election strategy and political campaigns.

The unopposed election of several candidates reflects the political understanding among parties in the West Bengal Rajya Sabha polls. However, Guruswamy’s entry into Parliament stands out not only because of her distinguished legal career but also because of the symbolic significance of her becoming the first openly queer MP in India.

Her presence in Parliament is expected to bring strong legal expertise and constitutional insight to legislative discussions. Many observers believe that her background as a senior advocate and constitutional expert could contribute meaningfully to debates on legal reforms, civil rights, and governance.

The development has also been viewed as an important step toward greater inclusivity and representation in Indian politics. Guruswamy’s journey from being a prominent constitutional lawyer to becoming a Member of Parliament highlights the increasing intersection between the legal profession and legislative policymaking in the country.
