17-Hour Airport Ordeal: Lawyer, Gauhati High Court Judges Sit Beyond Court Hours to Hear Case

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Monday displayed extraordinary patience and understanding after an arguing counsel arrived late due to massive flight disruptions at Delhi Airport caused by IndiGo cancellations.

The advocate, stranded for nearly 17 hours at Terminal 1, narrated the ordeal before the Bench, which decided to take up the part-heard matter at 3:45 PM and continued hearings past official working hours till 5:15 PM so that justice would not be delayed.

During the hearing, the counsel detailed the unprecedented disorder:

“It was a mad house at Terminal 1 in Delhi. My lords, it was total chaos and unbelievable mismanagement not only from IndiGo but also from CISF. I was in the airport since 6:30 in the evening, 17 hours before it finally took off.”

The advocate added that every hour, passengers were assured the flight would depart, only for another delay to follow.

“Water bottles started vanishing. We walked through vending machines at 3 AM just to find drinking water. They couldn’t control the crowd.”

According to him, DGCA’s new crew rest-time regulations led to severe operational disruption, resulting in 1,200 cancellations out of IndiGo’s total 2,100 scheduled flights in a single day.

Despite the delay, the Bench acknowledged the counsel’s circumstances and chose to continue the part-heard matter late into the evening.

“Only because this matter was part-heard and I did not want to leave it hanging, I wanted to close,”

the advocate told the judges.

The gesture resonated deeply with observers, highlighting the human side of the judiciary, often unseen behind formal robes and strict schedules.

At a time when airline chaos has left thousands stranded nationwide, the Gauhati High Court’s response has been praised as a reflection of judicial compassion and commitment to fairness.
