West Bengal Government Addresses Independence Day Violence Rumors in Calcutta High Court

In light of the recent controversies surrounding alleged incidents of the national flag’s desecration during Independence Day celebrations, the West Bengal government presented its stance in the Calcutta High Court. Advocate General SN Mookerjee, representing the state, sought to dispel the circulating rumors and provide clarity on the matter.

Addressing the bench, Mookerjee stated unequivocally,

“There have been no incidents of desecration of our national flag. It was only rumors.”

This statement was aimed at quelling the growing concerns and speculations that had been rife in the aftermath of the reported disturbances.

Digging deeper into the origins of the unrest, Mookerjee shed light on the historical context of the area where the violence had broken out. He pointed out that this particular region had witnessed similar disturbances in the past. Elaborating on the recent episode, the Advocate General explained,

“It was a dispute between two groups. Stone pelting took place, and all this was because of rumor-mongering. I can say that rumor-mongering led to violence.”

The Calcutta High Court, acting on the concerns raised about the alleged flag desecration, had previously directed the West Bengal government to furnish a comprehensive report detailing the events of the day. The state’s clarification, as presented by Advocate General Mookerjee, is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing the misconceptions and ensuring that the truth prevails.
