On Friday (15th March): Sadashivanagar police have lodged a POCSO case against former Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl during a meeting held on February 2.

NEW DELHI: On 14th March (Friday): Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, a senior BJP figure, charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO).

The incident, which allegedly occurred on February 2, led to a complaint being lodged by the mother of a 17-year-old girl at Sadashivanagar police station in Bengaluru in the early hours of Friday.

The complaint against Yediyurappa of sexual assault during a meeting related to official matters. The charges against him fall under sections 8 of POCSO (pertaining to sexual assault) and 354 A (related to sexual harassment).

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara addressed the media, confirming the registration of the case and emphasizing the need to ascertain the truth before giving further details. He stressed the sensitivity of the matter, given the involvement of a former chief minister.

“I have learned that one female has filed a case against me. The mother and daughter came to me to help them solve a problem. So, I called the cops and tried to solve the issue. But after a while, she started talking against me. I realised something was wrong as she was behaving bizarrely. Now an FIR has been registered. I’ll handle it. I didn’t expect something like this,” he said.

“I had informed the commisioner myself about the problems she was talking about,” he added. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara refused to reveal details on the investigation as the case involves a “former chief minister of our state.”

“They (police) have registered a case and a police investigation is on. Until and unless we know what exactly the truth is, we can’t reveal anything. This is a very sensitive thing because it involves a former chief minister of our state,” he said,

Yediyurappa explained the event on February 2. A woman came to him seeking help, so he called the police commissioner. He was surprised when the woman later accused him of wrongdoing. Yediyurappa said he’s cooperating with the police and is ready to face the legal process.

The filing of charges against Yediyurappa raises questions about the timing, especially with the Lok Sabha election looming. Nevertheless, the legal proceedings are underway, with authorities refraining from disclosing further details until a thorough investigation is conducted.
