Uttar Pradesh: In response to the recent violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the Yogi Adityanath-led government for ‘hasty’ divisions and urged the Supreme Court to address the issue and ensure justice.

The violence, which erupted on Sunday over a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, resulted in three deaths and numerous injuries, including police and administrative personnel. Protesters clashed with security forces, leading to a tense situation in the region.

Sambhal has been on edge since a local court ordered a survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid last month, following a petition that claimed a Harihar temple once stood on the site before it was destroyed by Babar.

A first round of the survey was conducted on Tuesday, with another scheduled for Sunday. However, when the survey team began their work yesterday, a large crowd gathered near the mosque, raising slogans. The situation quickly escalated into a violent clash between protesters and police, forcing authorities to use force to restore order.

District Magistrate Rajendra Pesia stated that stones were thrown at police, but the situation is now under control. Seven cases have been registered in connection with the violence. The main opposition party, Samajwadi Party, has accused the government of deliberately sending the survey team to “create chaos” and claimed that the other side was not consulted.

They argued that this was done to provoke public sentiment and divert attention from discussions on election irregularities, following the NDA’s significant victories in the recent Uttar Pradesh bypolls.

In a Hindi post on X, Priyanka Gandhi condemned the state administration’s handling of the situation, stating, “The hasty actions by the administration, without listening to both sides or building mutual confidence, have worsened the situation. This reflects the state government’s role in escalating tensions.”

She accused the government of promoting discrimination and division, emphasizing that such conduct harms both the public and the nation.

“The Supreme Court should take cognizance of this matter and ensure justice,” she added.

Gandhi also appealed to residents to maintain peace.

In response to the violence, authorities imposed prohibitory orders, restricted entry into the district until November 30, and suspended internet services for 24 hours. Schools remained closed on Monday.

Officials reported that Naeem, Bilal, and Nauman, all around 25 years old, were killed during the clashes and subsequently buried. Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh noted that shots were fired by troublemakers, injuring 15-20 security personnel.

The Congress party blamed the Yogi administration for the violence, accusing the BJP-RSS of orchestrating a “well-planned conspiracy” to disrupt communal harmony. They highlighted videos allegedly showing direct firing at protesters as evidence of this claim.
