Mumbai: The Bandra Court in Mumbai has sent Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, also known as Bijoy Das, to judicial custody for 14 days. His arrest is linked to the stabbing attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident took place on January 16, in the early hours, when Khan was attacked at his home on the 12th floor in Bandra and was stabbed six times.
The police arrested Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, from Thane on January 19. The authorities have stated that they have gathered “ample and strong evidence” against the accused. This evidence includes documentary, physical, and technical proof that supports the case.
Shariful Islam was initially kept in police custody, but on January 29, the Mumbai court extended his detention until the investigation is concluded. The police are using facial recognition technology to confirm the identity of the accused in the CCTV footage of the attack. They are also reviewing statements from Saif Ali Khan, his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, and the house staff to gather more details about the attack.
During a press conference, Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region), Paramjit Dahiya, provided an update on the investigation. He described the progress as “excellent, proof-based,” praising the efforts of the DCP Zone 9 team and the crime branch. Dahiya highlighted that the police have gathered substantial evidence, both physical and technical, during the investigation.
“We have ample and strong evidence against the accused person, including documentary, physical, and technical,” Dahiya said.
He further added that the police would use face recognition technology to confirm the identity of the accused before filing the chargesheet.
As of now, the police have not discovered any other individuals connected to the accused. However, they are continuing to question people who were in contact with Shariful Islam before and after the attack.
“We have sent the samples of fingerprints to the Crime Investigation Department (CID), but as of now, we have not received any official report regarding his fingerprints,” Dahiya noted. Despite these claims, he confirmed that the arrested suspect is the same person seen in the CCTV footage of the attack.
A twist in the investigation has come with claims made by Mohammad Ruhul, the father of the accused. Ruhul has publicly stated that his son is being wrongly framed in the case. He argued that the person seen in the CCTV footage is not Shariful Islam Shehzad and suggested that his son has been living in fear of arrest due to his lack of proper documents for staying in India.
Ruhul also revealed that he plans to approach Bangladesh’s foreign ministry and the Indian High Commission to seek his son’s release.
