KOLKATA: A viral WhatsApp message attempting to connect CJI DY Chandrachud’s wife with the alleged leader of the “north Bengal lobby,”Shyamapada Das, has led Bengal police to issue a strong warning against spreading harmful disinformation.
The “north Bengal lobby” reportedly consists of doctors, mostly alumni of North Bengal Medical College near Siliguri, who are said to exert influence over the Bengal health department.
The circulation of the message occurred around the same time as a Supreme Court hearing on the August 9 rape and murder of a postgraduate resident doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The hearing, initially set for Thursday, was deferred to Monday, with the bench headed by CJI Chandrachud.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, alongside Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will review the case. The court initially taken suo moto cognisance on August 22.

This upcoming session will also examine a complaint from the central government, alleging that the West Bengal government has been uncooperative with the CISF, which is responsible for providing security at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the third ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest scheduled for September 8, marking one month since the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor. This protest aims to continue the demand for justice, with several Ganesh Puja committees in Kolkata scaling back their celebrations in a show of solidarity.
In response to the viral message, the Bengal police issued a statement on their ‘X’ handle on Saturday, warning:
“Misusing the right to free speech to spread baseless lies, especially against the highest court, is illegal and punishable. The harshest legal action will be taken against those attempting to tarnish the judiciary’s image.”
