In a series of insightful opinion pieces, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has articulated his perspective on the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35(A), which previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister lauded the verdict, delivered on December 11, as a pivotal moment upholding India’s sovereignty and integrity, and a testament to the nation’s commitment to constitutional integration.
Reflecting on the historical context, PM Modi pointed out that Jammu and Kashmir, with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, had endured decades of violence and instability. He attributed this turmoil to the legacy of confusion and duality in national policies following centuries of colonization, particularly noting the missed opportunities at the time of independence for a clear stance on national integration.
PM Modi, who has been deeply involved in the Jammu and Kashmir movement from his early years, drew inspiration from historical figures like Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He emphasized that for him, Jammu and Kashmir was not just a political issue but a matter of addressing societal aspirations. Recalling Mookerjee’s sacrifice and Vajpayee’s powerful message of
“Insaniyat (humanity), Jamhooriyat (democracy), and Kashmiriyat (Kashmiriness),”
PM Modi underscored their influence on his approach to the Kashmir issue.
The Prime Minister firmly believed that Articles 370 and 35(A) were significant barriers to the development and integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. He argued that these articles created a divide within the nation, preventing many from contributing to the region’s resolution of issues, despite empathizing with the local populace.
Under Modi’s leadership, the government focused on understanding citizens’ concerns, building trust through supportive actions, and prioritizing development. He recounted the government’s initiatives, including the response to the 2014 floods in Jammu and Kashmir, the implementation of a special package in 2015 for infrastructure and job creation, and the promotion of sports to inspire the youth. He highlighted the story of Afshan Ashiq, a former stone-pelter who became a celebrated footballer, as an example of the positive change brought about by these initiatives.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the significance of the Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir, viewing them as a reflection of the region’s democratic spirit. He recalled his interactions with village chiefs, stressing the importance of protecting educational institutions.
Since the abrogation of Article 370, Modi noted substantial changes in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, including the widespread application of central laws, improved representation, and developmental strides. He pointed out that key government schemes like Saubhagya and Ujjwala have reached saturation levels, significantly enhancing infrastructure, healthcare, and financial inclusion.
In conclusion, PM Modi stated that the Supreme Court’s verdict reinforces the concept of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Greatest India), symbolizing unity and a shared commitment to good governance. He envisions a future where the youth of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh can aspire to a life marked by development, democracy and dignity, moving beyond the disillusionment and disappointment of the past.
