Mumbai Court Upholds Release of Hindi Film 'Maidaan'

MUMBAI: On Monday(8th April), A Mumbai court has made a significant decision regarding the release of the highly anticipated Hindi film ‘Maidaan,’ starring Ajay Devgn.Despite the ongoing disagreement in court and the issue of unpaid bills, the court decided that the movie can still be released on April 10.

Meherafrin Investments Private Limited (MIPL), the company that provided goods for the movie, went to the Mumbai City Civil Court. They wanted to stop the movie from being released because they hadn’t been paid Rs. 64,59,577. Even though they were promised payment, they still haven’t received Rs.1,07,21,930. They asked for that money along with extra interest.

In response, the court refused to grant an injunction against the film’s release after brief arguments. However, to safeguard MIPL’s interests, the court directed Byaview Projects LLP and Boney Kapoor, the film’s producers, to provide a bank guarantee of Rs. 96,06,743 within two weeks. The court’s decision partially favored MIPL, with the defendants instructed to comply with the order within eight days.

The legal representation for the producers, Bayview Projects LLP and Boney Kapoor, was handled by Advocates Ameet Naik, Madhu Gadodia, Rahul Thorat, and Tarini Kulkarni of Naik Naik & Co. On the other hand, MIPL was represented by NB Legal.

The troubles surrounding ‘Maidaan’ did not end there. The film, which faced several delays, was initially set to hit the screens on April 10 but will now be released on April 11. Just before its release, Boney Kapoor’s production found itself embroiled in a legal battle with a vendor who had filed a case against him for non-payment of dues. The vendor claimed that Kapoor had delayed payment of approximately Rs.1 crore for over two years, which was owed for supplying equipment during the film’s production.

According to reports, the Mumbai court ordered Boney Kapoor to pay a staggering amount of Rs. 96,06,743. The court’s verdict explicitly stated that the defendants must provide security for the mentioned amount and produce it for the court’s disposal when required.

In response to the court’s decision, the vendor issued an official statement expressing satisfaction with the outcome. They highlighted Kapoor’s refusal to pay the interest despite withholding the payment for over two years. The statement also emphasized the importance of standing up for one’s rights, particularly in the film industry, where individuals should not be taken advantage of or bullied. The vendor asserted that hard work deserves proper compensation.

The court has given Boney Kapoor a deadline of eight days to comply with the payment order. As of now, Kapoor has not commented on the verdict or the ongoing controversy surrounding ‘Maidaan.’
