New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to MLA Abbas Ansari in a money laundering case. Ansari is the son of the late gangster-politician and former MLA Mukhtar Ansari, who passed away in jail a few months ago.
A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Pankaj Mithal extended the relief to Ansari. On August 14, the apex court issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), seeking its response to Ansari’s appeal challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision to reject his bail.

On May 9, the high court dismissed Ansari’s bail plea, stating,
“Considering the material available on record, including the flow charts which clearly demonstrate the origin of funds and also explain how the funds found their way into the accounts of the accused Ansari, this court finds him not entitled for a bail at this stage.”
The Allahabad High Court had also noted in its order that the money trail linked Abbas Ansari to the transfer of funds involving two firms M/s Vikas Construction and M/s Aaghaaz. According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), these companies were allegedly used by Ansari for money laundering activities.
The ED filed a case against Ansari, an MLA from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, based on three prior cases. Ansari was formally booked in this case on November 4, 2022.

The Mau MLA is currently being held in Kasganj jail.
The Ansari family has long been a subject of media attention, with Mukhtar Ansari’s criminal record and political clout creating a powerful yet controversial legacy. His death in custody earlier this year was itself surrounded by legal and political scrutiny. Abbas Ansari, following in his father’s political footsteps, has maintained that he is innocent and that the charges against him are politically motivated.
The granting of bail to Abbas Ansari is a significant development in the case, but the legal challenges facing him are far from over. The ED expected to continue its probe into the financial transactions linked to the Ansari family’s alleged criminal activities.
