Uttarakhand: In the Haldwani violence case, Abdul Malik, the primary suspect, was brought before the Sessions Court in Haldwani for a pivotal hearing. Following his arrest in Delhi by the Nainital police, the authorities requested the court to grant them a 10-day custody for thorough interrogation. The court, acknowledging the gravity of the investigation, approved the police’s plea, thereby placing Malik under police custody until March 6, setting the stage for further legal proceedings.

The arrest of Malik by the Uttarakhand police on Saturday marks a crucial turn in the investigation of the violent incidents that unfolded in Banbhulpura, Haldwani, on February 8. In recognition of the police team’s efforts in apprehending Malik, State Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar announced a reward of Rs 50,000, as confirmed by spokesperson IG Nilesh Bharne.

“The Nainital police were in a constant search for the mastermind of the Haldwani violence. The mastermind, Abdul Malik, today has been arrested in Dehli,”

– stated Uttarakhand Police Headquarters (PHQ) Spokesperson Nilesh Anand Bharne.

The backdrop of this case is steeped in chaos and disorder, with the violence reportedly erupting during an anti-encroachment drive in Haldwani. The confrontation escalated quickly, featuring stone-pelting, vehicle arson, and a mob besieging the local police station, prompting the administration to issue a shoot-at-sight order to quell the unrest.

The Municipal Corporation issued a recovery notice to Malik for Rs 2.44 crore, aimed at compensating for the damages inflicted on government property during the turmoil. The violent clash resulted in the tragic loss of four lives and injuries to 250 policemen, with the mob going as far as to set the Banbhulpura police station ablaze, leading to a two-day curfew imposition across the town.
