Enforcement Directorate (ED) has formally contacted Apple, the phone’s manufacturer, seeking access to Arvind Kejriwal’s iPhone. Nevertheless, they were informed that a password was necessary to access any data.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has escalated its investigation involving Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by seeking assistance from tech giant Apple. The move aims to unlock Kejriwal’s iPhone to scrutinize data that may shed light on the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) election strategy and potential pre-poll alliances. This request underscores the intensive scrutiny under which the AAP and its leader find themselves, particularly in the lead-up to crucial electoral battles.
Kejriwal, who has been in Enforcement Directorate‘s custody since March 21, is at the center of a probe with significant political ramifications. Despite the seizure of four mobile phones, including the Chief Minister’s, on the night of his arrest, the ED’s investigation has hit a technological roadblock. Kejriwal’s refusal to unlock his iPhone has prompted the agency to reach out to Apple, though they were reminded of the necessity of a password for data retrieval.
This investigative turn of events is rooted in allegations of money laundering connected to a new liquor policy, with the Enforcement Directorate suggesting that funds amounting to Rs 100 crore were illicitly obtained, a portion of which allegedly financed AAP’s election campaign in Goa for the 2021-22 cycle. The Chief Minister, however, has countered these claims by emphasizing the legal advisement behind his non-compliance with prior summons.
Within the confines of Enforcement Directorate‘s questioning, which reportedly spans five hours daily, Kejriwal has been “confronted” with evidence and witnesses, including C Arvind, a former aide to the now-jailed Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The interactions aim to piece together Kejriwal’s involvement and knowledge regarding the drafting of the controversial liquor policy and the financing of AAP’s electoral endeavors.
Despite the gravity of these allegations, Kejriwal has maintained a stance of limited recall and knowledge, especially concerning the detailed operations and financial strategies of AAP. This defense extends to rebuffing claims made by N D Gupta, AAP’s National Treasurer, regarding Kejriwal’s overarching role in party finances and election expenses.
The case has not only highlighted the intricate dynamics of political funding and policy-making but has also thrown a spotlight on the challenges law enforcement faces in navigating digital privacy and data encryption. With the Enforcement Directorate considering an extension of Kejriwal’s remand or potentially shifting him to judicial custody, the saga encapsulates the broader tensions between governance, accountability, and the rights to privacy.
As the political landscape braces for the implications of this investigation, the AAP leadership, including Kejriwal, remains under intense scrutiny. The outcome of this high-stakes inquiry could significantly influence the public perception and political fortunes of AAP, especially with the looming specter of upcoming elections and the party’s strategic positioning therein.
