Today, On 29th May, A Congress member Akshay Kanti Bam and his father granted anticipatory bail by Madhya Pradesh High Court in an attempted murder case. The court’s decision comes amid allegations of their involvement in the incident. The bail provides temporary relief from arrest as investigations continue.

Indore: The Madhya Pradesh High Court granted anticipatory bail to Akshay Kanti Bam, a recent defector from the Congress party to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and his father. This bail granted in connection with an attempted murder case dating back to a 2007 land dispute incident.

Bam’s defence argued that the prolonged delay in the case and his strong local ties made it unlikely that he would abscond. Notably, Bam earlier been selected as the Congress party’s candidate for the Indore Lok Sabha seat, but withdrew his nomination on the last day before the deadline and subsequently joined the BJP.

In a recent development, the Indore bench of the High Court granted anticipatory bail to Bam and his father Kantilal in a case related to an alleged attack on a local farmer, Yunus Patel, in 2007.

Justice Prem Narayan Singh made this decision five days after hearing arguments from all the parties involved.

Earlier, a city judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) had ordered the addition of Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code in the FIR registered against Bam and his father on April 24. This was in connection with the alleged attack on Yunus Patel over a land dispute.

Subsequently, a sessions court in Indore issued arrest warrants against Bam and his father on May 10. However, the defence lawyer, Ajay Mishra, argued that there, a 17-year-long delay in the matter and that Bam and his father have many movable and immovable properties in the city, making it unlikely that they would abscond.

On the other hand, Yunus Patel’s lawyer, Mukesh Dewal, argued that despite the JMFC’s order, Bam and his father did not appear before the sessions court on May 10, leading to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

Ultimately, the High Court considered the arguments and granted anticipatory bail to Bam and his father, citing the long delay in the case and their property holdings in the city. According to reports, Dewal alleged that Bam seen celebrating the birthday of a state minister on May 10.

The police stated that an FIR (First Information Report), registered against Bam, his father Kantilal, and others for allegedly attacking Patel on October 4, 2007, over a land dispute. Patel alleged that during this incident, Satvir Singh, a security agency owner, also fired a bullet at him from a 12-bore gun at the behest of Kantilal. Singh has since passed away.

After Bam’s last-minute withdrawal from the Lok Sabha polls in Indore, the Congress party appealed to citizens to vote for “NOTA” (None of the Above) in order to “teach the BJP a lesson”.
