The Bar Council of India (BCI) has announced that final-year law students can now register for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) XIX on November 25, 2024, following a Supreme Court directive. This move aligns with prior rulings to support students’ eligibility and academic progression.
New Delhi: In a landmark decision, the Bar Council of India (BCI) announced that final-year law students will be permitted to register for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) XIX, scheduled for November 25, 2024. The decision follows a Supreme Court review of a recent petition challenging a prior BCI notice excluding these students from the exam.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra, assessed the BCI’s compliance with an earlier ruling that mandated the eligibility of final-semester students for the AIBE. The BCI’s counsel confirmed that revised guidelines for the upcoming exam are already in place, pending consultation with relevant stakeholders.
“The rules are ready; we need four weeks to consult with all stakeholders and then present them to the court,“
stated the BCI counsel.
This adjustment aligns with the Supreme Court’s prior decision in Bar Council of India v. Bonnie Foi Law College & Ors, which recognized the right of final-year law students to take the AIBE. This change prevents potential academic delays for students and complies with constitutional guidelines established by earlier judicial rulings.
