Justice Satish Chandra Sharma was born on November 30, 1961, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. His father, Dr. B.N. Sharma, served as a Professor at Jabalpur University and later as the Vice Chancellor of Barkatullah University, Bhopal. His mother, Shanti Sharma, was the Principal of Maharani Lakshmibai Higher Secondary School, Jabalpur, and worked as a District Education Officer in Jabalpur.
Justice Sharma completed his early education at Christ Church Boys Higher Secondary School, Jabalpur, and later at Central School, Jabalpur. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981 from Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar, earning distinctions in three subjects.
He pursued his legal education at the same university, graduating with an LL.B. in 1984 and receiving three gold medals for academic excellence.
Justice Sharma enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh on September 1, 1984. He practiced at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, specializing in constitutional, service, civil, and criminal law. In May 1993, he was appointed as Additional Central Government Counsel.
In 2003, the Madhya Pradesh High Court designated him as a Senior Advocate, making him one of the youngest individuals to receive this distinction at the age of 42.
On January 18, 2008, Justice Sharma was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court after more than two decades as an advocate. He was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on January 15, 2010.
After serving for 12 years at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, he was transferred to the Karnataka High Court, where he took oath as a judge on January 4, 2021. On August 31, 2021, he was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
On October 11, 2021, Justice Sharma assumed the role of Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. He was later appointed Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on June 28, 2022.
On November 6, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Sharma’s elevation to the Supreme Court of India, highlighting his extensive judicial experience across multiple High Courts and his expertise in constitutional, civil, and criminal law. He took oath as a Supreme Court Judge on November 9, 2023.
Notable Judgments
- Ashok Agarwal v. Union of India (2023): Justice Sharma directed the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi to strictly adhere to the Supreme Court’s guidelines in Balram Singh v. Union of India (2023) for the effective enforcement of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
- National Association for the Deaf v. Union of India (2023): Justice SC Sharma held that the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) violated the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPWD Act) by failing to provide job reservations for Persons with Disabilities (PwD). Justice Sharma emphasized the RPWD Act’s mandate for four percent reservations for PwDs, with one percent specifically allocated for individuals with visual or hearing impairments, autism, or other physical disabilities. He highlighted the need for “reasonable accommodation” to ensure PwDs could perform to their fullest potential.
