Justice Sandeep Mehta was born on January 11, 1963, and holds a BSc and LLB degree. Justice Mehta enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Rajasthan on August 8, 1986. He practiced in both trial courts and the Rajasthan High Court, specializing in criminal and constitutional law.
He served as counsel for three judicial inquiry commissions led by retired and sitting judges of the Rajasthan High Court. Additionally, he was a member of the Bar Council of Rajasthan from 2003 to 2009, serving as its Vice Chairman from 2004 to 2005, and later as its Chairman in 2010.
Justice Mehta was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on May 30, 2011, and was made a Permanent Judge on January 6, 2013. On February 15, 2023, he was transferred to the Gauhati High Court, where he served as Chief Justice.

On November 6, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his elevation to the Supreme Court, highlighting the lack of representation from the Rajasthan High Court since Justice Ajay Rastogi’s retirement in June 2023. Justice Mehta took oath as a Supreme Court judge on November 9, 2023.
NOTABLE JUDGMENTS
- All Assam Transgender Association v. State of Assam (2023): As Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Mehta, along with Justice Devashis Barauh, directed the Assam government to establish an Office of the Transgender Welfare Board to address challenges faced by transgender persons.
- Mohan Lal v. State (2022): Justice Mehta, along with Justice Sameer Jain, overturned a dowry death conviction by a trial court. The High Court found that the trial court had unjustly convicted the accused without relying on evidence from medical experts and prescriptions supporting the accused’s mental health claims.
