Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale, born on June 23, 1962, in Nipani, Belgaum district, Karnataka, pursued his higher education in Arts and Law at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad.
Justice Varale began his legal career by enrolling in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa on August 12, 1985. Over 23 years of practice, he specialized in civil, criminal, labor, and administrative law at the District and Sessions Court in Aurangabad and handled constitutional matters at the Bombay High Court, Aurangabad Bench.
From 1990 to 1992, he served as a law lecturer at Ambedkar Law College, Aurangabad. Later, he was appointed Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the High Court Bench in Aurangabad. Additionally, he served as Additional Standing Counsel for the Union of India.
Justice Varale was elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on July 18, 2008, and became a Permanent Judge on July 15, 2011.
On September 28, 2022, the Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice U.U. Lalit, recommended him as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Subsequently, on October 15, 2022, the Union Government formalized his appointment.

After serving as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Varale was recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court on January 19, 2024, by the Supreme Court collegium led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. His appointment, formalized on January 24, 2024, recognized his seniority among Scheduled Caste judges, his leadership as the sole Chief Justice from the Scheduled Caste community, and his extensive judicial contributions across diverse legal domains.
