BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court today quashed two hate speech cases filed against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. These cases were about some comments he allegedly made during a BJP protest rally in November 2024.
In that rally, Bommai was said to have spoken against the Waqf Board and the Congress-led Karnataka government.
He reportedly said,
“If a stone is thrown in Savanur, wherever it falls, it is waqf land.”
This comment and others led to cases being registered against him under Section 196(1)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which relates to promoting enmity between religious groups.
Bommai challenged these cases in court by filing two petitions. He argued that these criminal complaints were frivolous and vindictive, meaning they were not serious and were made to target him unfairly.
Justice SR Krishna Kumar heard both petitions and agreed with Bommai. The judge said that the cases should not continue and gave an order to cancel them.
So now, both hate speech cases against Bommai have been quashed by the High Court.
Bommai was represented in the court by Senior Advocate Prabhuling Navadgi, and the petitions were officially filed by Advocate Shivaparasad Shantanagoudar.
CASE TITLE:
Basavaraj Bommai v. State of Karnataka.
