Uttarakhand: The ongoing dispute surrounding a mosque on Bhatwari Road in Uttarkashi has prompted the Uttarakhand government to reaffirm its commitment to preserving communal harmony. The state assured the Uttarakhand High Court on December 16 that strict measures will be taken against any attempts to disrupt peace.
During the court proceedings, Additional Government Advocate J S Virk conveyed the state’s stance to a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Pankaj Purohit. The matter pertains to a petition advocating the mosque’s protection amid allegations of its illegality by right-wing groups.
The dispute has escalated tensions, particularly in the lead-up to a Mahapanchayat organized by right-wing factions. Although the event was allowed under strict conditions, concerns were raised over alleged hate speeches delivered during the gathering. Petitioners have sought time to substantiate claims that the disputed mosque is registered under Waqf ownership.
The state government emphasized its commitment to addressing the situation responsibly, ensuring that peace and order are maintained. The case continues to unfold as the court examines the petitioners’ arguments and supporting documentation regarding the mosque’s legal status.
