The Uttarakhand High Court has stayed the upcoming panchayat elections in the state due to a dispute over reservation. The decision came amid growing concerns about fairness and representation in the poll process.

The Uttarakhand High Court issued a stay on the upcoming panchayat elections in the state due to disputes regarding the reservation process.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendar and Justice Alok Mehra, acted on petitions challenging the reservation rotation system for the three-tier panchayat elections.
The elections were scheduled for July 10 and 15, with vote counting set for July 19.
The court’s stay will be in effect until further notice.
This decision coincides with the enforcement of the model code of conduct in the urban areas of the 12 districts preparing for the elections.
State Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar had announced the panchayat election schedule on June 21, with nominations expected to start on June 25.
The panchayat polls were highly anticipated in Uttarakhand, as the administrators appointed to the panchayats had completed their terms.
Secretary of Panchayati Raj, Chandresh Kumar, mentioned that the process for the gazette notification regarding the reservation system for the three-tier panchayat elections is underway.
He confirmed that the high court’s interim stay regarding the reservation process is being adhered to properly.
Kumar stated,
“The gazette notification of the Reservation Rules 2025 is being sent to the Government Press in Roorkee for printing and will soon be presented to the high court for proper judicial guidance”.
He emphasized that the state government is dedicated to conducting the Panchayati Raj system in a constitutional and legal manner while fully respecting the court’s dignity and instructions.
