The Telangana High Court has granted temporary relief to KT Rama Rao, a former minister, preventing his arrest pending a decision on his petition to dismiss corruption charges related to a Formula E car race. Rao is accused of misusing funds and authority, with legal concerns raised over a Rs 55 crore payment made without proper approval.

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has provided relief to KT Rama Rao, former state minister and leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, by stating that he will not be arrested until a decision is made on his petition. The petition, filed by Rao, seeks to cancel the corruption case lodged against him in connection with alleged irregularities in the Formula E car race held in Hyderabad.
The case, filed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), accuses KT Rama Rao of misusing government funds and his authority as the Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister. The ACB claims that Rao directed the state government to pay Rs 55 crore to the Formula E organisers based on verbal orders, without any cabinet clearance, and in violation of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.

As per the allegations, this payment was made despite the lack of formal approval, leading to significant concerns regarding transparency and accountability. In response, the RBI imposed a fine of Rs 8 crore on the Telangana government for unauthorized transactions related to the event. The fine was later paid by the Congress government after taking power.
The arguments surrounding Mr. Rao’s petition were completed today, and the court has temporarily suspended any decision in the case. As of now, KT Rama Rao will not face arrest until the court takes further action on his petition.
