The Madras High Court declined to hear YouTuber Savukku Shankar’s plea to defreeze bank accounts and return seized devices, directing him to instead seek relief before the jurisdictional magistrate after his arrest over alleged assault and Rs 2 lakh extortion.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court declined to consider a petition filed by YouTuber Savukku Shankar seeking the defreezing of his bank accounts and the return of electronic gadgets and other items seized by the Chennai police.

A vacation bench comprising Justice S. M. Subramaniam and Justice P. Dhanabal instead directed Shankar to approach the competent jurisdictional magistrate for appropriate remedies. Shankar had earlier been arrested by the Adambakkam police on allegations that he assaulted film producer Purushothaman and extorted Rs 2 lakh from him.

Savukku Shankar is a Tamil YouTuber, social commentator, and activist widely known for his Savukku Media channel, where he discusses alleged corruption and often voices strong criticism against government authorities and public officials. His activities have resulted in several legal cases over the past year.

Earlier on December 13, Chennai police arrested the YouTuber after allegedly forcing entry into his residence following a prolonged standoff.

The action was based on a complaint filed by film producer Purushothaman, accusing Shankar of assault and extorting Rs 2 lakh.

Subsequently, on December 26, 2025, the Madras High Court granted him 12 weeks of interim bail on medical grounds after his mother filed a plea highlighting his cardiac and diabetic ailments. During the proceedings, the court also criticised the state police for allegedly “harassment tactics against dissenters.”

Shankar later filed another plea seeking the de-freezing of his bank accounts and the return of his seized electronic devices and other confiscated materials.

The Madras High Court vacation bench declined to consider his plea and advised him to seek remedies before the Saidapet jurisdictional magistrate court instead.
Shankar has also filed public interest litigations (PILs) seeking CBI probes into alleged irregularities in sanitation worker schemes of the government, though earlier pleas for CBI investigations were refused by the High Court.
