Sanatan Swaraj Party Registration: Delhi High Court Issues Notice to ECI Over New Party Registration

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Election Commission of India (ECI) in a petition filed by a political entity named ‘Sanatan Swaraj Party’. The petition seeks directions to the ECI to approve the name and formally register the proposed political party.

The matter came before Justice Amit Bansal, and the court acknowledged the urgency of the petition. Counsel for the petitioner highlighted that the application for registration has been pending since last year, and the party intends to contest the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026.

They further stated that publishing the party name in eight newspapers, a statutory requirement, would take approximately 45 days, adding to the urgency.

The court observed:

“The present petition has been filed seeking direction to the ECI to approve the proposed name of the petitioner ‘Sanatan Swaraj Party’ on an urgent basis and direct the ECI to register the proposed political party. Petitioner submits that there is urgency as the petitioner party wishes to contest the upcoming elections in West Bengal.”

The Election Commission of India accepted the notice. The court has directed the ECI to file a short affidavit within two weeks addressing the matter. The next hearing is scheduled for February 11, 2026.
