Today, On 20th February, The Delhi High Court sought a response from the Delhi Police on the bail application filed by Olympian Sushil Kumar in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar.

The Delhi High Court requested the Delhi Police’s response regarding a bail application submitted by Olympian Sushil Kumar in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar.

Justice Anup J. Bhambhani issued a notice to the Delhi Police and the family of the deceased, instructing them to file a status report and a reply, respectively.

Emphasizing that the Supreme Court had cancelled the bail previously granted to Kumar by the high court in August of last year, The judge remarked,

“I think you are being ambitious,”

The court inquired,

“Once the Supreme Court has taken a view, what do you expect from me?”

Kumar’s counsel argued that the bail application should be considered, as all public witnesses in the trial had been examined. However, representatives for the Delhi Police and the deceased’s family countered that not all public witnesses had yet been brought forward.

The court stated,

“Let a status report/detailed reply be filed before the next date of hearing. Renotify on May 4.”

Kumar was arrested in May 2021, and a sessions court granted him a week’s interim bail for knee surgery on July 19, 2023.

The Supreme Court revoked Kumar’s bail on August 13, 2025, overturning a March 4 high court ruling and highlighting that his domineering influence over witnesses or potential delays in trial proceedings could not be disregarded.

Earlier, On February 6 this year, a trial court denied bail to Kumar, stating that the possibility of him influencing witnesses cannot be ruled out.

In October 2022, the trial court framed charges against Kumar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to murder, criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and rioting with a deadly weapon. Charges were also filed under provisions of the Arms Act.

The trial court had noted that Dhankar was forcibly taken to Chhatrasal Stadium and brutally assaulted by multiple individuals using baseball and hockey sticks.
